China Sends Condolences to El Salvador

China Thursday sent condolences to the victims of the El Salvador earthquake.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin sent a message of condolence to Salvadorean President Francisco Flores, foreign ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said.

"The Chinese side expresses its concern and sympathy towards the earthquake in El Salvador" he said, adding that the Chinese Red Cross has already provided assistance "within its capacity."

The earthquake that struck Saturday left more than 666 people dead, 2,538 wounded and more than 44,000 homeless, while over 2,000 people are missing.
