Lien & Koo Urge Taiwan Authorities to Return to '92 Consensus'

KMT chairman Lien Chan and Koo Chen-fu, chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) of Taiwan exchanged views on the political situation in the island province and relations across the Taiwan Straits on January 16 afternoon.

Both stressed that to break the deadlock, it is necessary to return to the consensus on the One-China Principle reached between the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the SEF in 1992.

Lien Chan has repeatedly appealed that the new authority should return to the 1992 consensus on the one-China principle as expressed respectively by both sides of the Straits. This proposition had been expressed in the six-point statement entitled "safeguarding constitution and rescuing Taiwan" published after the meeting between chairmen of the three opposition parties. But the two men made no mention of the "national unification council" of Taiwan and the question regarding whether or not Koo Chen-fu will continue to serve as chairman of the SEF.
