Biggest Embezzler Sentenced to Death in Qinghai

Biggest Embezzler Sentenced to Death in Qinghai
The biggest corruption case in Qinghai Province was tried in Xining City Intermediate People's Court on January 16, and the accused Chen Zhiqing was sentenced to death.

Chen Zhiqing, former division head of the Xining branch of the People's Bank of China, was arrested in May 1999 for being suspected of embezzlement.

Examination of his case shows that between 1992-98, Chen Zhiqing, taking advantage of doing budgeting and accounting work, had colluded with others to embezzle15.493 billion yuan of tax money by such means as tax rebate, false allocations and bill alteration. He had committed altogether 12 such offences.

It is reported that this is the biggest corruption case ever discovered in Qinghai Province. So far only 2.2m yuan of illicit money and bribes were retrieved, the rest had all been squandered.

The Xining Intermediate People's Court tried this case publicly on January 16. After going through the procedures of query and proof and court debate followed by panel discussion, the court pronounced that Chen was sentenced to death and deprived of political rights for life.
