Chinese Vice Premier Meets Italian Prime Minister

Chinese Vice Premier Qian Qichen met with Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato Tuesday.

Qian said humankind has entered a new century, and the world economy and science and technology have also entered a new phase of development.

With efforts made by people worldwide, "it is absolutely possible to achieve lasting peace, stability and development in the new century," he said.

With similar or identical views on a number of key global and regional issues, China and Italy can improve their relationship in order to make contributions to resolving disputes and conflicts peacefully, the vice premier said.

Amato agreed with Qian. Italy wants to tackle international and regional conflicts through dialogue and consultation and gave full play to the role of United Nations, he said.

Now holding the presidency of G-8, Amato said, Italy can assist developing countries for economic development, world peace and

development.

Italy attaches importance to the role of China in the international arena and hopes to enhance consultation and cooperation with China on "all issues," he said.
