Chinese Foreign Minister Tang's Six-Nation Tour Fruitful, Spokesman

The Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan's recent official visit to Turkey, Libya, Central Africa, Cameroon, Gabon and Angola has been fruitful, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao.

Zhu made the remark Thursday afternoon at the regular press conference of the foreign ministry.

He said that Tang held talks with the foreign ministers and met with the state leaders of the above six countries during the visit, which lasted from January 6 to 17.

Tang discussed with them on furthering the bilateral relations and regional and international issues of common concern, Zhu said.

Tang also signed various agreements with the six countries on bilateral cooperation, the spokesman said.

The governments of the six countries expressed their hope to enhance the exchange, consultation and friendly cooperation with China, Zhu said.

They also reiterated that they would continue to stick to the one-China position and support China's complete reunification, according to the spokesman.

Those African countries spoke highly of the achievements of the China-Africa Forum which was held in October last year and expressed their willingness to further deepen the friendship and cooperation between African countries and China under the new framework of the Forum, Zhu said. The Turkish government said that it is willing to work with China to develop the friendly cooperation, to strike on international terrorism of any form, national separatism, and religious extremism, under the guidance of the joint Communique between the two countries signed during the previous visit to Turkey by Chinese President Jiang Zemin, he said.

Zhu said that Tang reiterated the importance China attaches to developing the friendly cooperation with the six countries and its willingness to support their efforts in keeping the regional peace and developing their national economy.

He said that Tang also discussed economic and trade cooperation with the leaders of the six countries and particularly talked with leaders of the African countries on how to carry out the Program for China-Africa Cooperation in Economic and Social Development, issued during the China-Africa Forum.

Tang's visit has served to strengthen exchange, build up consensus, deepen friendship and expand cooperation between China and the six countries, Zhu said.

He stressed that the Chinese government believes that friendly cooperation between China and the developing countries will grow further in the new century.

Such cooperation will be an important contribution to the common advancement and prosperity of mankind, the Chinese spokesman said.
