Situation on the Korean Peninsula should be tackled with wisdom, courage

(People's Daily Online)

No. 2087 resolution of the U.N. Security Council caused strong reaction from the DPRK. The tensions on the Korean Peninsula are once again faced with a risk of dramatic escalation.

The situation on the peninsula is complex and dangerous. China stresses the following principles and position at this critical moment: that the authority of the Security Council resolutions need to be respected; the parties concerned must remain calm and sober; and reckless move is bound to exacerbate tensions.

The basic rationality in discussing the situation on the peninsula is that the peninsula cannot withstand a vicious cycle. However, for some time, the relevant parties have lost direction, become reluctant to restrain the impulse to create "advantageous" changes, and tried to suppress the counterparties and gain the initiative during the subtle evolution process.

The parties concerned urgently need to examine themselves in this regard. Without thorough self-examination and even self-criticism in order to reach necessary consensus, it would be impossible to prevent the situation from further deteriorating.

To achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, to normalize the relations among the countries concerned, and to build a peace mechanism in Northeast Asia are the important aspects in creating peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Both temporary and permanent solutions are necessary in preventing the deterioration of the security situation on the peninsula. Concerns of all parties should be balanced through dialogues and consultation.

The six-party talks are the irreplaceable platform committed to this regard. The interruption of the dialogue on this platform has resulted in increasingly magnified motions of the parties concerned, increasingly stronger shock waves that threat the peace and stability on the peninsula, and even outbreaks of military conflict.

As an important party of the six-party talks, China takes the overall situation into account, firmly advocates the resume of six-party talks as soon as possible, and has done a lot of painstaking work for the realization of denuclearization and long-term stability on the Korean Peninsula. China has acted as a responsible country that deserves respect and positive response from the parties concerned.
