A 17-year-old who broke into his neighbor's home and injured a father and son with knives was sentenced to six years in prison and fined 3,000 yuan (US$482) for burglary, Changning District People's Court in Shanghai said today.

Chen Ling lived on the seventh floor of a residential complex in Changning District. One day last May, he climbed to the eighth floor from the balcony of the room he rented. He then smashed the living-room window on the eighth floor with a wooden bench, the court said.

A man and his son heard a loud voice, went to the living room and fought with Chen. Chen took out two knives and slashed both men. The father, who was said to be a painter, sustained severe wounds to his hands, prosecutors said.

They let Chen go and later called an ambulance and police, the court heard.

Chen didn't take any valuables or money when he fled, prosecutors said.

Chen said he liked watching gangster films. He also told the court he usually carried knives to protect himself because he worked as a debt collector.

He was given a lighter sentence because he is still a minor.

Suspects convicted of burglary are usually sentenced to at least 10 years in prison and in extreme cases can be given the death penalty.
