Jiugui Liquor, a high-end liquor producer, is still using the same production facilities and has no plans to recall its products after media revealed that its products contain excessive amount of plasticizers.
The 21st Century Business Herald reported earlier that samples of the company's liquor sent to a third party quality testing service contained three kinds of plasticizers, one of which is poisonous DBP.
The Hunan-based company vowed on its Sina Weibo that by the end of November it would replace the facilities suspected of having caused the plasticizers to leak into its products.
The company was aware of the plasticizers before the exposé, but did not see it as a serious problem, reported the Beijing News.
It also said that the government of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Prefecture will serve one of the products at the upcoming local people's congress and people's political consultative conference. The product they plan to serve had a plasticizer level 260 percent higher than the national standard.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine confirmed that the level of DBP, was 1.04 milligrams per kilogram, far above the 0.3-milligrams limit set by the Ministry of Health.
Food additive expert Ji Heli told the Global Times that DBP is an environmental hormone and it causes harm over a long period of time. "Plasticizers are known to be detrimental to immune and digestive systems, reproduction abilities and causing sexual precocity," Ji said.
