With the carrier-borne fighters of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) landing on and taking off from the "Liaoning" aircraft carrier, China's first-generation carrier-borne J-15 fighter debuted in the world.
As China's first-generation multi-purpose carrier-borne fighter, the J-15 fighter features large combat radius, good maneuverability and great bomb-carrying capacity, etc. It can carry such precision-strike weapons as anti-ship missile, air-to-air missile, air-to-ground missile and precision-guided bomb according to different operations, realizing strike and combat capabilities in all maritime areas and air spaces. It has comprehensive capabilities comparable to those of Russia's Sukhoi Su-33 and the US F/A-18 Hornet, the main active carrier-borne fighters of the world. Therefore, it has been given an official nickname - Flying Shark.
According to Sun Cong, chief designer of the J-15 fighter, it is a multi-purpose carrier-borne fighter designed and developed on the basis of China's third-generation fighter technologies.
Equipped with two high-power engines, the J-15 fighter has foldable wings. With such newly-designed systems as high lift device, landing-and-takeoff gear and arresting hook, it has the flight characteristics needed for aircraft carrier deck-landing while maintaining excellent operational performance in combat.
