A pregnant woman is asking for a refund from a local consulting agency that helps residents deliver their children in the US due to concerns over the quality of its service, local media reported Wednesday.
The expectant mother, surnamed Chu, signed a 128,000 yuan ($20,480) contract with the agency, Meibaozhijia, so she could have her baby in the US, according to a report in Youth Daily. The contract covered the cost of accommodations in China and the US for both before and after the birth.
Chu demanded that the agency refund her 30,000 yuan deposit after she found complaints online about the agency's service, according to the report. Specifically, Chu was concerned that the agency would not provide the variety of food that it promised.
The agency said it is now negotiating with the woman over the refund.
The dispute highlights questions about agencies that help Chinese parents have children overseas.
Some parents, especially those from large cities, seek to have a child in the US while on a tourist or business visa so he or she can receive American citizenship. Meibaozhijia said it helps parents obtain US visas and find apartments to stay in, among other services, Youth Daily reported.
