Chinese leader learns "lessons" from the people

XI'AN, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Liu Yunshan likes to hear heartfelt commentary from the public, not unlike a curious student absorbing lessons from a teacher.

A member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Liu had the opportunity to learn from the people during an inspection tour conducted in northwest China's Shaanxi Province from Jan. 11 to 14.

"Without inspections, officials have no right to speak out. We should be as honest and curious as primary school students when communicating with the people," Liu said during the tour.

For Liu, one of the best ways to learn is to talk with the people face-to-face.

During the four-day tour, Liu arranged three symposiums with local CPC officials and ordinary folks from cities, counties, towns and villages. Each lasted more than three hours.

The first symposium, held on the first day of the tour, was held spontaneously. Although they had no notes or other preparatory materials, Liu and the rest of the attendees spoke passionately, holding talks from 7:30 p.m. until nearly midnight.

The second symposium, held in a village deep in the mountains, brought together 14 CPC officials, including a 76-year-old man and several fresh college graduates.

"During this inspection, we've heard the people's heartfelt words. With support from local officials and the people, we can feel more confident and determined," Liu said.
