UNITED NATIONS, March 26 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition of Chinese oil paintings representing the convergence of eastern and western art opened Tuesday at the United Nations.

"A Semblance Great: The Shadow of a Shade" includes 38 pieces done by Li Hongtao, an award-winning Chinese artist.

"I believe that this exhibition will help enable the world to better feel the pulse of Chinese modern art, and promote artistic innovation which will boost mutual learning and common prosperity of Chinese and western cultures," Li Baodong, China's permanent representative to the UN, said at the opening ceremony.

The ambassador said Li Hongtao has made dedicated efforts to explore a viable way to combine traditional Chinese art with the modern and post-modern oil painting techniques of the west.

The unique artistic style of Li Hongtao is embodied in bold strokes, profound conceptions and delightful contrasts. His work has been well recognized by art communities and has won numerous awards, including the Van Gogh Gold Award, in international exhibitions.

"Exhibitions like this bring China to the American people, bring China and its arts to the people of the United Nations," said Stephen Orlins, president of the National Committee on United States-China Relations.
