While the Chinese ballet delighted Canadian audience, opera buffs here in Beijing got to enjoy "Carmen" starring a U.S. soprano. Ever since it premiered in 1875, the masterpiece by French composer Bizet has long been one of the most popular operas in the world.

As with Carmen, an attractive gypsy woman, the music in this opera which evokes the yearning for freedom, is instantly recognizable to many opera fans.
Conductor Zhang Guoyong said, "The music in Carmen is beautiful! There’s a saying that music is the heart of an opera. And Carmen consists of a multitude of classic pieces. We authentically present the classic tunes, which is definitely appealing to the audience. "
Adapted from the novel by French author Prosper Merimee, the opera Carmen was completed in 1874 by Georges Bizet. It centered on the gypsy girl Carmen and her relationship with Corperal Don Jose and matador Escamillo.
The opera discloses the eternal conflicts between men and women, duty and desire, love and freedom.
Zhang said, "This version of Carmen is one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. The director, Francesca Zambelo is definitely world-class, our Carmen is stunning, plus the seamless combination of the characters, emotions and melody, it’s definitely a top production."
Carmen is one of the highly sought-after shows in the National Centre for the Performing Arts’ repertoire. The latest round of performances opened on Thursday and saw some sold-out nights!
