LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- The American Film Institute ( AFI) picked the Academy Awards forerunners including "Argo," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Lincoln" as top choices for a list of 10 best films in 2012, the group announced in Los Angeles on Monday.
The trio of critically well-received films were also joined by other hits including "Les Miserables," "Silver Linings Playbook," Ang Lee's fantasy film "Life of Pi," Christopher Nolan's superhero film "The Dark Knight Rises," director Benh Zeitlin's debut " Beasts of the Southern Wild" and Wes Anderson's latest indie movie "Moonrise Kingdom."
"Django Unchained," a western film which was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and stars big names including Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio, rounded out the annual list.
"AFI AWARDS celebrates America's storytellers as collaborators, " said AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale when announcing the awards. "We are honored to bring together artists as a community, without competition, to acknowledge the gifts they have given the world in 2012."
AFI, a Los Angeles-based non-profit national arts organization, also announced a list of the year's top television shows which includes "American Horror Story," "Breaking Bad," "Game Change," " Game of Thrones," "Girls," "Homeland," "Louie," "Mad Men," "Modern Family" and "The Walking Dead."
The awards will be presented at a luncheon in Los Angeles Jan. 11.
