Former Olympic champion Maurren Maggi ponders retirement

09:35, May 21, 2013

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's former Olympic long jump champion Maurren Maggi has conceded her dream of competing at the Rio 2016 Games could be over after failing to qualify for this year's World Championships in Moscow.

The 36-year-old managed a best jump of just 5.92 meters to finish in last place during her final World Championship qualifying event in Sao Paulo on Sunday.

She blamed a lack of support and insufficient infrastructure in Brazil for her loss of form.

"If I don't have a support structure behind me I will stop before the Rio Games," Maggi said on Monday. It doesn't make sense to be racing against time like this."

Maggi, who has been beset by hip problems in the past two years, won gold at the 2008 Beijing Games but failed to make the final at last year's London Olympics.

The 2013 IAAF World Athletics Championships will be held in Moscow from August 10-18.
