U.S. air traffic down in October

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. airline system traffic in October 2012 shrank from a year before, the Transportation Department reported Tuesday.

U.S. airlines carried 60.8 million domestic and international passengers in October 2012, 0.6 percent fewer than that in October 2011, said the department.

Specifically, there were 0.8 percent fewer domestic passengers but 1 percent more international passengers in October 2012 than in the same month in 2011.

Delta Airlines was the biggest carrier of passengers in October, reaching 9.996 million. Southwest Airlines carried the most domestic passengers, with 9.590 million. United Airlines took the first place in terms of international passengers, with as many as 1.8271 million.

In the first 10 months of 2012, U.S. airlines carried 619 million passengers in total, up 0.9 percent from the same month of 2011. There were 539.2 million domestic passengers, and 79.8 million international ones.
