JERUSALEM, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Israel and Greece are weighing establishing a group that would jointly handle regional emergencies under the framework of existing agreements.
Israeli Energy and Water Minister Silvan Shalom and Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos discussed the initiative in a meeting in Jerusalem on Wednesday, according to a statement released by Shalom's office.
The two officials also discussed regional developments and bilateral relations in a number of areas, the statement said.
It further noted that Shalom has requested during the meeting with Avramopoulos that the European Union add Lebanon's Hezbollah to its list of terror organizations.
On the long-stalled peace talks, Shalom said that Israel awaits a decision by the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table without preconditions, the statement said.
Military and economic ties between Jerusalem and Athens have strengthened in the wake of a diplomatic fallout between Israel and Turkey over an Israeli commando raid on a Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship in May 2010, in which nine Turks were killed.
Shalom also proposed advancing joint Israeli-Greek tourism packages for Christian pilgrims, as well as laying an electric cable that would run from Israel to Cyprus to Greece and other European states.
