UNITED NATIONS, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The UN mission in Libya said that the "meaningful participation of women" in the process of drafting the country's constitution is conducive to the construction of the new Libya, deputy UN spokesman Eduardo del Buey told reporters here Wednesday.

"The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) says that the representation and meaningful participation of women in the Constitution-Drafting Assembly and in the process of drafting the Constitution will contribute to the building of the new Libya," del Buey said at a daily news briefing here.

"The mission says that promoting women's rights is a priority and that it will continue in its efforts to offer assistance and support to pertinent national bodies for broader participation by women in the political process," he said.

"The UN mission will also continue to call for the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women with a view to achieving equality with men in enjoying political rights and freedoms," he said.

Libyans are due to elect a constituent assembly to draft a new constitution in June, which marks the first national vote after the unrest that toppled former ruler Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011.
