MOSCOW, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Foreigners adopted over one tenth of the orphans in Moscow last year, an official of the civil registry service said Monday.
Among the 1,141 children adopted in 2012, 130 of them, or 11.4 percent, were adopted by foreign foster families, Irina Muravyova, head of the city's civil registry service, told a press conference.
"That's 172 fewer adoptions than the figure in 2011," she said, adding that the families came from the United States, Italy, Slovenia and France.
Muravyova said 22 percent of children in Moscow were born when their parents were not married, and nearly 12 percent of the babies were born in families with one or both parents holding foreign citizenship.
Starting from Jan. 1, Russia banned U.S. citizens from adopting Russian children as a retaliation to the so-called Magnitsky Act passed by Washington in December.
The U.S. act introduced a blacklist of Russian officials allegedly linked to the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky at a Russian prison in 2009.
