Why do top scorers in the Gaokao often choose to go abroad? (2)

(People's Daily Online)

Specifically, this trend is a result of fierce competition for employment. As more and more employers seek out versatile and internationalized talent, studying abroad increases its attraction for many.

In addition, as education is increasingly viewed as a service and a product, an enthusiasm for studying abroad is the result of consumer choice. It is natural that people choose the best option when their field of choice expands beyond the Chinese mainland to include universities in Hong Kong and overseas.

This trend cannot be ignored. It is not bad thing if excellent students choose to study abroad - but it would be a bad thing if they were choosing to do this because they have doubts about the worth of our own education system. That students choose to study abroad is not something to be feared - that those who remain in China might find themselves regarded as indifferent and incapable would be a matter of the greatest concern.

Universities need to conduct a thorough process of self-analysis. We will definitely continue to lose young talent if our universities do not make an overall improvement, enhancing our educational concepts and narrowing the gap between them and the world's top universities.

Although we do not encourage the over-hyping of Gaokao top scorers, it is a positive thing that this report offers the country an opportunity to think about our education system and the ways we can succeed in retaining more of our top talent.
