Difficulties in drug rehabilitation (2)

(People's Daily Online)

1. Difficulty in drug rehabilitation consolidation. After drug addicts return to the society, most of them become the unemployed. As they have nothing to do and become homeless (making trouble out of nothing), many of them start to abuse drugs again (relapse). The main reasons are: firstly, they are discriminated by the society and become unemployed after being refused many times when looking for a job. After returning to the society, most of drug addicts lose their original jobs (and become unemployed) due to the fact that they used to abuse drugs; they are labeled as “drug addicts,” so others avoid them as they are “pestilence” and the units and enterprises refuse to accept them (making them have nothing to do, make trouble out of nothing, and start to abuse drugs again); secondly, they are discriminated by their families, and become homeless after being refused by relatives. After returning to the society, most of drug addicts cannot control themselves from drug abuse. Due to this, many families break up, and mosts of them cannot return to families and even become homeless. Relatives’ exclusion of them and family breakups isolate the drug rehabilitation and recovery personnel ideologically, emotionally, and in life, making them isolated from the society, even get a sense of inferiority, lost the courage and confidence (conditions) to have a new life and job, and eventually start to abuse drugs again; thirdly, they are physiological dependent on drugs, and it is difficult for them to get rid of drug addiction. There is a saying that “it takes the people who abused drugs once 10 years to get rid of drug addiction, and they would have the desire for drug abuse in the whole life.” This saying just talks about drug addicts’ dependence on drugs. Drug addiction (dependence) means that chronic multiple encephalopathy is resulted in due to repeated drug abuse (specified in the Identification Standards for Drug Addiction issued by the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Health), and manifests as the behaviors of compulsively seeking and abusing drugs regardless of negative effects (drug addiction mainly harms the cardiovascular system, digestive system, and respiratory system, associated with damages of different levels to personal health and social functions). Therefore, drug addicts are not only lawbreakers, but also victims and patients (representing the triple attributes of drug addicts). The dependence of drug addicts on drugs and the harm of drugs to people can only be understood through personal experience. It can be said that an error committed on impulse may turn out to be the sorrow of a whole life.
