Immersing himself in work, dressing wounds and performing three to five surgeries a day, relieved his distress. In August 2008, he wore a smile again when the first patient at the center regained the ability to walk.
Seeing the patients recover quickly, Poon is also healing from his traumatic experience.
Despite the exhausting workload, Poon has a busy schedule. In 2009, he seriously injured a disc in his spine by carrying heavy medical equipment in and out of Sichuan.
After undergoing surgery in Hong Kong, he needed a month to recover.
Poon also participated in disaster relief after floods on the mainland in 1992 and 1998. On the invitation of the Red Cross Society of China in Beijing, he volunteered to train first-aid responders on the mainland and has helped design and edit teaching materials since 2006.
Poon has won high recognition for his volunteerism. On Sunday, he was chosen among the top 10 Hong Kong Loving Hearts 2012, organized for the third time since 2010 by Asia Television. In 2010, he was one of the five winners of the Hong Kong Humanity Awards, for exceptional humanitarian efforts and community involvement.
