China remains sober despite economic miracle (2)

(People's Daily Online)

08:06, November 16, 2012

The CPC remains sober because of its correct understanding of international and national conditions. China’s national strength has greatly increased since the Reform and Opening-up, but the basic reality that China is still in the primary stage of socialism and will remain so for a long time to come has not changed, nor has Chinese society’s principal contradiction – the one between the ever-growing material and cultural needs of the people and the low level of social production. China remains the world’s largest developing country. The country’s per capita GDP ranked 89th in the world in 2011, far lower than that of developed countries, according to the International Monetary Fund.

China has maintained miraculously rapid growth over the past 30 odd years. At the same time, it was noted in the report to the 18th CPC National Congress that there are still considerable difficulties and problems ahead. In order to build a comprehensively well-off society, the CPC must have greater political courage and wisdom to deepen reforms in key areas at the appropriate time, resolutely remove all ideological and systematic barriers to scientific development, and make various systems and mechanisms more complete, effective, and mature.

The 18th CPC National Congress fully demonstrated China’s resolution to overcome difficulties and determined the goals and tasks in the next five years and even more. According to “Lianhe Zaobao” of Singapore, the consensus of accelerating and pushing forward the reform ran through the whole 18th CPC National Congress and the sense of urgency that “Time waits for no man” was revealed clearly during the report. Japan’s Sankei Shimbun said that the 18th CPC National Congress stressed the high speed of Chinese economic growth and showed China’s determination to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor, improve the environment, eradicate corruption and maintain social stability and unity.

The development and resurgence of a country is a long and arduous process but it only needs a few steps at crucial moment. As a developing country, China is faced with unprecedented opportunities, risks and challenges. Only by keeping a cool head and enthusiasm can China certainly shoulder the historical responsibility and write the next great chapter in its history.
