Topwell Chemicals highlights Africa's only organic pigment manufacturing plant at Coatings For Africa 2026
Topwell Chemicals, the Durban-based subsidiary of global pigment manufacturer Sincol, is showcasing its locally manufactured organic pigments at the Coatings For Africa Expo, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening South Africa's industrial manufacturing sector while positioning itself as a strategic supplier for the African coatings industry.

Speaking at the exhibition, Topwell Chemicals Durban site CEO Siva Reddy highlighted the significance of the Durban facility, describing it as a landmark investment for both South Africa and the continent.
"Sincol is one of the largest pigment manufacturers in the world, based in China, and Topwell Chemicals is its subsidiary in Durban. This is Sincol's first manufacturing plant outside China, and importantly, it is the only organic pigment manufacturing facility in Africa," said Reddy.
The company manufactures high-quality organic pigments used across several industries, including coatings, plastics, rubber, inks and paints. Unlike consumer-facing businesses, Topwell Chemicals operates exclusively within the industrial sector, supplying manufacturers whose products rely on high-performance pigments.
"The people that we supply are companies. The pigments that we manufacture become part of the products we produce, whether it's paints, plastics, inks or rubber products. Our focus is on delivering consistent quality and reliable supply to industrial manufacturers," he explained.
Reddy noted that sustainability has become one of the defining trends shaping demand within the pigment industry.
"There is a strong drive towards sustainability, particularly around lead-free pigments. We are working closely with the Lead Exposure Elimination Project to provide organic pigments that replace traditional lead- and chrome-based pigments, supporting the industry's transition towards safer and more environmentally friendly products," he said.

The shift reflects growing demand from coatings manufacturers seeking products that meet increasingly stringent environmental and regulatory standards.
Participating in Coatings For Africa is about more than showcasing products, Reddy said; it is about demonstrating that Africa now has its own world-class pigment manufacturing capability.
"The whole idea of this expo is exposure. People have been hearing about the pigment plant being built in South Africa for a long time, but now it has materialized. We want our customer base to understand that we are manufacturing many of these pigments locally, and we encourage companies to support local manufacturing," Reddy said.
Manufacturing locally offers customers shorter lead times, improved supply chain reliability and faster technical support, reducing dependence on imported pigments. While Africa presents significant opportunities for international manufacturers, Reddy acknowledged that expanding into the continent comes with unique challenges.
"There are cultural differences as well as varying local policies and bureaucratic processes that companies need to navigate. Our strategy has been to establish a strong local team while working closely with experienced local distributors who understand the market," he said.
That approach has already begun delivering tangible results. Topwell Chemicals has partnered with Delta Colours, its official distributor in South Africa, for the past three years. "Delta Colours has been our local distributor in South Africa, and together we've doubled our local sales revenue this year. That partnership has played an important role in expanding our market presence," he added.
Although much of the company's raw materials are sourced internationally, Topwell Chemicals continues to integrate local suppliers where possible. "We import most of our raw materials from abroad, while some auxiliary raw materials such as hydrochloric acid and caustic soda are sourced locally in South Africa," said Reddy.
The company believes that combining international sourcing with local procurement helps create a more resilient and efficient manufacturing operation. Looking ahead, Topwell Chemicals has ambitious plans to expand production and meet growing regional demand.
"We have the only pigment manufacturing facility in Africa. Within the next two to three years, we expect to reach our maximum design capacity of 10,000 tonnes per annum from our Durban manufacturing site," Reddy said.
Reaching full production capacity would further strengthen South Africa's position as a manufacturing hub for pigments, reducing reliance on imports while creating additional opportunities for industrial growth across the continent.
As the only pigment manufacturing facility of its kind in Africa, Topwell Chemicals is positioning itself as a strategic partner for manufacturers seeking high-quality, locally produced pigment solutions while supporting localization, innovation and sustainable industrial development.
The Coatings For Africa Expo continues to bring together manufacturers, suppliers, technology providers and industry leaders from across the coatings value chain, providing a platform to showcase innovation, strengthen partnerships and drive the future of Africa's coatings industry.
