Jiangsu takes lead in green electricity certificate trading in China
NANJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- East China's Jiangsu Province has registered the trading of over 1 million green electricity certificates, according to Jiangsu Power Exchange Center Co., Ltd.
The province is one of the first regions in China to approve the trading of green electricity certificates. Renewable electricity producers can obtain a government-issued certificate which represents 1,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy, and sell the certificate for economic and environmental benefits.
The trading can help market players embrace green power consumption and reduce carbon emissions, said Wei Xu, general manager of Jiangsu Power Exchange Center Co., Ltd., adding that the province's trading volume mainly comes from export-oriented and foreign-invested companies.
Some multinational enterprises have pledged to support the use of 100 percent renewable electricity, and certain countries have set clear requirements on the consumption of green power for imports and exports, Wei added.
"The certificates serve as proof of such low-carbon commitments and play an important role in facilitating eco-friendly trade worldwide," Wei said.
