"Don't Worry Darling" tops North American box office on opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros. Pictures' psychological thriller "Don't Worry Darling" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 19.2 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

Directed by Olivia Wilde, "Don't Worry Darling" stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan, Chris Pine and Wilde herself. The film tells the story about a 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community, who began to worry that disturbing secrets are hidden in her husband's glamorous company.

The film holds an approval rating of 38 percent based on 226 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a "B-" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Overseas, the film took in 10.8 million dollars for a global total of 30 million dollars this weekend.

Sony's presentation of TriStar Pictures' historical epic film "The Woman King" came in second with 11.1 million dollars on its second weekend for a North American total of 36.29 million dollars.

In third place, Disney's re-release of 2009's epic science fiction film "Avatar" earned 10 million dollars this weekend. Directed by James Cameron, the film remains the highest-grossing movie of all time at the global box office with over 2.84 billion dollars. "Avatar: The Way of Water," a direct sequel to the film, is set to be released in December this year.
