People’s wellbeing a top priority amid fight against epidemic

China has managed to ensure people’s wellbeing while making all-out efforts to fight the COVID-19 outbreak, as the Chinese government has always made the safety and health of the people its top priority.

Since the epidemic began, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee has adopted a specific plan to ensure the supply of staple and non-staple foods, while local governments have found workable means to ensure the supply of daily necessities for residents.

Wei Bangqing, a vegetable grower from Xingbin district, Laibin, south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has been extremely busy this month as a result of the district opening up a “green channel”. This channel allows vegetable dealers to drive their vehicles to farms after reporting and disinfection to purchase farm produce, and then directly distribute them to communities. Thanks to this measure, Wei is able to deliver 3,000 to 4,000 kg of vegetables to rural areas every day.

In east China’s Jiangxi province, e-commerce platforms have sold over 3.3 million orders of unsold agricultural products in half a month, including vegetables, oranges and mushrooms, while Beijing has adopted measures to ensure that every family can buy pork.

According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, the wholesale price of grain, edible oil, vegetable, eggs and pork at 100 large farm product wholesale markets across the country dropped to varying degrees on March 4 compared to the end of January.

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com and express delivery giant SF Express operated normally during the Spring Festival holiday, meeting the demand for “last mile” delivery services.

In addition, China has rolled out measures to bring about stable employment and ensure enterprises can successfully resume production.

Working together with enterprises, human resources and social security departments across the country have sent over 800,000 migrant workers back to their posts through “point-to-point” transportation using chartered buses, planes and trains.

As of March 1, over 90 percent of large industrial enterprises in 11 provinces had resumed production. By the end of February, 80.6 percent of 2,552 foreign trade companies had resumed work.

The country has also released policies to support small and medium-sized enterprises in their drive to resume work and production, including the easing of value-added tax and social security payments.

“With life now gradually returning to normal, and consumption, investment, as well as imports and exports gradually rebounding, China is able to further improve people’s wellbeing,” said Chi Fulin, head of the China (Hainan) Institute for Reform and Development.
