Chinese mobile games increasingly popular overseas

(People's Daily Online)    09:34, February 21, 2020

In recent years, a batch of high-quality mobile games developed by Chinese companies have won popularity in overseas markets.

Chinese games accounted for 26 percent of the global market in 2019. Furthermore, their value at overseas gaming market is expected to exceed $14 billion in 2020.

The domestic market for mobile games is gradually becoming saturated, which has facilitated the business of game developers overseas. In China, the number of mobile game players reached 620 million in 2019, making for year-on-year growth of 3.2 percent, according to a report released by China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association.

Overseas markets, on the other hand, are showing great potential. In the first half of 2019, the actual revenue of Chinese online games from overseas markets rose by 23.8 percent year on year, 13 percentage points higher than that occurring in the domestic market.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a multiplayer battle royale mobile game developed by Tencent Games, has been launched in more than 200 countries and regions and downloaded over 600 million times. This number does not even include the download volume being found in the Chinese mainland.

According to Tencent Games, it tends to add Chinese cultural elements into the products accordingly and suit the needs of overseas consumers while developing products for global users.

Xiang Ligang, Director-general of the Information Consumption Alliance, suggests that Chinese companies develop games based on the needs of local markets and furthermore that they try to explore game-related product development initiatives, such as toys and movies, to prolong the life of their games.
