China’s e-commerce platforms seek to promote unsold agricultural products

Taobao, China’s leading online shopping site, announced the establishment of a 1-billion-yuan charity fund to help farmers find markets for unsold agricultural products on Feb.12.


According to Taobao, the campaign will continue until the country runs out of such products. In addition to Taobao, China’s e-commerce platforms and Pinduoduo also recently announced plans to help farmers.

Taobao has launched 10 measures for procurement, logistics, sales, operations and other aspects, such as the establishment of a dedicated line to help farmers, collecting information on unsold agricultural products.

Resources are distributed according to the actual situation of unsold agricultural products, so as to provide sales solutions and help these products go online to be sold as quickly as possible.

Taobao will launch a series of special zones for selling agricultural products on its website, increase the centralized purchase of agricultural products from core producing areas, increase input into green logistics lines for agricultural products, reduce the selling costs of agricultural products on the platform, and help farmers to put on live broadcasts for free. also released a letter to farmers nationwide on Feb. 10, announcing the opening of a green channel for fresh products across the country. The platform intends to collect nationwide information on agricultural products that were affected by the epidemic and are not selling well.

The main website will provide merchants with settlement, operation, promotion and other supporting policies, such as quick reviews. At the same time, exclusive services to help merchants' growth have been provided for merchants in Hubei province, including a number of measures such as reduced and exempted platform usage fees and free agent operation services, during the epidemic.

Pinduoduo officially launched its zone for anti-epidemic agricultural products to help poor areas and some agricultural production areas on Feb. 10 to solve the problem of agricultural products that could not be sold during this period.

In the Pinduoduo APP, users can go directly to this zone and buy fruits and vegetables straight from the production area.

At present, the zone covers agricultural products from nearly 400 agricultural production areas, including more than 230 state-level poverty-stricken counties. The products include navel oranges, apples and strawberries.
