AI system helps control pneumonia epidemic

(People's Daily Online)    14:38, February 07, 2020

A new system that can identify people with a high fever, a typical symptom of the pneumonia epidemic caused by the novel coronavirus, was officially put into use at the Mudanyuan subway station in Beijing’s Haidian District on Feb. 4, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Developed by Megvii Technology, an AI company based in Beijing, the system is equipped with infrared cameras and can autonomously take the temperatures of passers-by without their having to stop for the process.

It is said to be able to test 300 people per minute, with a deviation of 0.3 degrees.

Once anyone with a high temperature is identified, the system will sound an alarm and show their faces on a big screen for staff members at the station to track them down for further investigation.

Specially upgraded facial recognition technology allows the system to obtain the information of those people from their faces, bodies and clothing, which is much more convenient than traditional facial recognition, as passengers are now required to wear masks amid the pneumonia outbreak, said a manager with the company.
