China's returnee entrepreneurs help energize rural industries

(People's Daily Online)    16:11, January 02, 2020

China's rural innovation and entrepreneurship environment has continued to improve in recent years, attracting a large number of returnee entrepreneurs to inject new growth into and energize rural industries.

8.5 million migrant workers, urban white-collar workers, university graduates, veterans and other personnel have returned to their hometowns to start innovative projects or businesses, creating more than 34 million jobs in rural areas.

There are 83.6 startup projects for every 100 administrative villages, according to one survey.

The entrepreneurial boom is characterized by the returnees being mostly career-driven entrepreneurs with an average age of around 45. For more than 70 percent of the entrepreneurs, the decision to return to their hometowns was influenced by friends and relatives.

The majority of these entrepreneurs are skilled at management, have enough capital and are very well connected. Furthermore, they pay great attention to the integration of agriculture and modern industrial elements, promoting the construction of a modern rural industry system with the integrated development of "agriculture +".

Statistics show that more than 60 percent of current rural entrepreneurship projects are innovative, with more than 80 percent belonging to the industrial integration category, and 55 percent using new models such as "Internet +".
