A 65-year-old man from southwest China’s Chongqing municipality who was diagnosed with terminal cancer 11 years ago now has a six-pack after 10 years of working out, and has been nicknamed “Grandpa Hardcore”.

The man, Jiang Ming, has taken part in three bodybuilding contests in Chongqing, receiving passionate applause every time he stood on the stage.

“I didn’t compete to win the trophy, but to show my perseverance, my love for life, and my optimism,” he said.

Jiang has a self-built gym at home on his balcony. All of the fitness equipment at his home gym were made by him.

“These are pieces of scrap gear, each of which is around 15 kilograms,” said Jiang, pointing to a “barbell” at his gym.

In addition, Jiang has also made a fitness bench with a wood bench, bricks and wood plates, where he can lie down and lift his barbells.

According to him, he works out every morning from 7:00 am to 9:00 am, then takes a cold shower.

It’s barely possible for people to believe that such a healthy man once suffered from severe cancer. He was told 11 years ago that he would only be able to live for another three to five years, dealing him a heavy blow.

Because of the disease, Jiang had to quit his job and receive regular treatment. “After about half a year, I decided to work out and bravely face what was ahead,” Jiang told Chongqing Morning Post.

He planned to run at first, but finally chose indoor exercise out of concern for his safety. After three years of working out, Jiang felt healthier and stronger, and his immunity also improved. It energized him again, so he kept practicing continuously in the following years.

Since 2017, he has been competing in bodybuilding contests in Chongqing every year. Referring to his performance, he said that he doesn’t want any prize, but just hopes that his willpower can inspire the younger generation and encourage more people to join the sport.
