Over 60 percent of young Chinese citizens are afraid to check their physical examination reports, a recent survey revealed.
The report, covering respondents aged between 18 and 35, reflects the younger generation's lack of confidence in their health, as well as their self-awareness of unhealthy working habits and lifestyles.
According to the report, 62.6 percent of the respondents said they shoulder high pressure and worry that physical examinations may show problems. They believe their unhealthy lifestyles have already caused trouble for their bodies.
However, fear comes from a lack of understanding.
Wang Peng, director of the Medical Examination Center of Peking University Third Hospital, told Science and Technology Daily that there are more and more test indicators, such as metabolic indicators and tumor markers. However, in many cases, an abnormal index cannot explain the problem. Doctors need to make a comprehensive analysis of multiple indexes to give more scientific judgments or suggestions, he added.
Such abnormalities may be caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, including bad diet and lack of exercise, and can return to normal, said Tang Jianchun, a doctor from the health screening center of Beijing Shijitan Hospital. "The doctors' advice varies from the examination results," Tang added.
"People tend to focus on the physical examination screening, but we now emphasize disease prevention, and we hope the younger generations can focus more on health management," said Wang.
Young people take in more calories and spend less time on sports, so most of them are troubled by metabolism issues such as obesity, Wang explained, adding that such problems can be solved through solutions and adjusting nutrition.
Many young people are staying up late due to career pressure and irregular daily schedules. Such lifestyle choices may trigger metabolic disorders and increase the risks of disease.
Wang believes that mental disorders caused by staying up late also need to be dealt with to avoid further problems in the future.
