The deep infiltration of e-commerce giants in third- and fourth-tier cities have indicated a consumption boom in these emerging markets throughout China.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Commerce, 70 percent of newly-registered e-commerce platform users came from China’s third- and fourth-tier cities and towns. Buyers from these emerging markets placed 60 percent of orders on home appliances, beauty products and furniture during this year’s “Double 11” shopping festival.

Suning.com, the primary subsidiary pioneering in online and offline retailing, has opened more than 4,400 retail cloud stores across the country.

Shi Feihu in Xiangcheng county, Xuchang city, central China’s Henan province, runs a Suning cloud store. According to him, within three days of opening, the store secured a turnover of 300,000 yuan. The store features a wide variety of brands and products, and its products account for 30 percent of the town’s market.

According to Suning’s statistics, in the first three quarters of the year, the sales volume of digital cameras in counties and rural areas increased by 1,500 percent. Purchases of high-end home appliances such as blenders and multi-door refrigerators also tripled.

Zhang Jindong, chairman of Suning, said counties and towns provide excellent opportunities for consumption as the inter-connectivity between rural and urban areas is enhanced.

Not long ago, JD logistics launched a project intending to improve logistics efficiency through upgrading warehouses, applying big data and increasing the use of artificial equipment.

Thanks to urbanization, a rise in per capita consumption, internet technologies and 5G, smaller cities and rural areas will surely become a hotbed for retailers, said an official with the Ministry of Commerce.
