Commentary: Silence on Xinjiang documentaries reveals double standards of Western media

By Jia Xiudong (People's Daily Online)    17:26, December 11, 2019

China Media Group's China Global Television Network (CGTN) recently released two documentaries on the fight against terrorism in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The two documentaries have been widely watched on social media platforms both at home and abroad.

However, some Western media organizations, which have taken keen interest in the so-called “human rights issues” in Xinjiang, are completely silent on the two short films.

In front of the irrefutable evidence and facts regarding Xinjiang, Western media chose to turn a deaf ear. They would rather believe lies fabricated by the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces and anti-China forces than look for and respect the basic facts about Xinjiang.

They described China’s preventive counter-terrorism and anti-extremist measures in Xinjiang as “human rights infringements”, and said the efforts to fight terrorism and safeguard social stability in Xinjiang are “religious freedom crackdowns”.

No violent terrorist incident has occurred in Xinjiang for three consecutive years. This shows that the preventive counter-terrorism and anti-extremist measures taken by Xinjiang have achieved tangible results. The sense of security and happiness felt by local people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang has been greatly improved.

The right to life and the right to development are primary human rights. Xinjiang's anti-terrorism anti-extremist measures have guaranteed the people's rights to life and development to the greatest extent, and are the best protection of human rights.

Such counter-terrorism measures also provide useful experience for the international fight against and prevention of terrorism in accordance with law, and are an important contribution to the international cause of counter-terrorism.

The essence of the so-called “issues” in Xinjiang hyped by Western media is not about “religion or human rights issues”, but about anti-separatism, anti-terrorism, and safeguarding Xinjiang’s long-lasting peace.

By distorting Xinjiang’s anti-terrorism and anti-extremist measures, whilst at the same time neglecting its achievements in the fight against terrorism and human rights protection, as well as its improving economic and social environment and people’s living standards, the Western mainstream media and politicians are applying double standards in Xinjiang.

This approach on the one hand deepens the misunderstanding of China by the Western public, and on the other hand fuels the momentum of the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces.

On the issues concerning Hong Kong and Tibet, Western media also apply double standards, exposing their prejudice and arrogance to the world. They always attempt to stand on the moral high ground and demonize socialist China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and pursue political correctness by questioning and discrediting China on human rights and religion.

Distorted public opinion in the West about China will inevitably lose support. Luckily, many people in the West and people with a sense of rationality have made more objective and fair voices on China-related issues, questioning the wrong China-related statements made by some Western media and politicians.

More importantly, the 25 million people in Xinjiang and the 1.4 billion Chinese people are in the best position to say how the situation in Xinjiang is, not some outsiders.

We advise some Western media to take the right stance by respecting the facts, and upholding an objective, fair and non-selective point of view, and stop politicizing human rights issues and pursuing double standards.
