The number of Chinese living in Yangon with a household registration is close to 100,000, ranking 4th in the region, according to Yangon Region Government Social Affairs Minister U Naing Ngan Lin.

As indicated by local statistics, 97,000 Chinese in Yangon have registered permanent residence in the region, said U Naing Ngan Lin.

Bamar residents still far outnumber all other ethnic groups combined, at 5 million, accounting for 85 percent of the population of Yangon, followed by the Kayin, at 240,000. In addition, there are 220,000 people of Indian origin and 1,800 of Kokang.

Myanmar should conduct a national census every 10 years, according to resources from the Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population. Since 1983, the country only carried out one census in 2014, the only census in 30 years. At the time of the 2014 national census, there were about 51.5 million people in Myanmar.
