Beijing holds series of forums to mark National Poverty Relief Day

(People's Daily Online)    09:06, October 16, 2019

A series of forums on poverty alleviation were held on Oct. 14 at the Beijing Convention Center to mark China’s 6th National Poverty Relief Day and the 27th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, both of which fall on Oct. 17.

The activity series consists of 21 themed forums on poverty alleviation through developing local industries, education, healthcare, ecological environment protection and other areas.

By conducting exchanges and communications over the prioritized, hot-spot and difficult issues in poverty reduction, the event fully demonstrated the progress, practices, examples, experiences and achievements of China’s poverty alleviation since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

According to the forums, China has implemented more than 980,000 industrial development projects for poverty alleviation that cover 92 percent of the impoverished households. Among the 4.75 million households across the country getting rid of poverty in 2018, 3.53 million, or 74.2 percent were assisted by local industries.

By the end of August, the market of China's National Equities Exchange and Quotations, also known as the new third board, had served 315 companies from 197 impoverished counties and districts in 22 provinces. About 10 percent of them were listed on the innovation market.

So far, 98 percent in China's administrative villages have been connected to fiber optic and 4G networks, and 99 percent of impoverished villages have been covered by broadband services. On top of that, China also greatly expanded the broadband coverage and increased the network speed in remote rural areas.
