Eight Chinese high-tech giants were added to the US Entity List as the US department of commerce announced on Oct. 7 local time.

The companies include two video companies - Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co. Furthermore, SenseTime Group Ltd., the world’s largest AI startup, and Megvii Technology Ltd. were also targeted.

The announcement came on the exact occasion when negotiators from China and US were preparing for a new-round trade talks. It was commented as a “usual tactics” by the US side according to the Chinese public opinion, as it has been well-known for the US side to put extreme pressures on its counterpart before negotiations.

The US intends to force China to make concessions in the approaching economic and trade consultations by exerting extreme pressures, He Weiwen, senior fellow at Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies of Renmin University of China, told People’s Daily Online.

He also noted that such a move indicates that the US has not changed its strategy of cracking down on China’s high-tech industry.

The US has been leading the high technologies such as artificial intelligence while such industries in China are still inferior to the world’s top. However, facts have proven that technological blocking will in no way stop China’s progress in the regard of high technology.

“Undoubtedly, the unilateral sanction launched by the US side will bring some short-term effects to some Chinese enterprises. In the long run, it will fail to strangle China’s development in high-tech industries,” said He.

“On the other hand, the US companies will suffer from unnecessary losses after losing the huge Chinese market, and they might stand up to resist,” he added.
