During the just-concluded National Day holiday which lasted from Oct.1 to 7, various forms of consumption experienced an explosive growth, indicating strong power for consumption upgrading.
Tourism revenue reached 650 billion yuan, up 8.5 percent year on year. Box office revenue reached 4.2 billion yuan, an increase of 120.9 percent from last year at 1.9 billion yuan. From Oct.1 to 6, the transaction volume of UnionPay surpassed 1.7 trillion yuan, up 27.7 percent year on year.
According to China UnionPay, Guangdong, Henan and Shandong provinces topped the country in terms of the revenue generated by shopping.
The catering industry also prospered during the holiday. According to statistics from the Ministry of Commerce, the revenue of retail and catering enterprises hit 1.5 trillion yuan, 8.5 percent more than the same period last year.
During the holiday, 782 million trips were made, up 7.8 percent year on year. Southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region alone received 33 million tourist arrivals, up 21.4 percent from the same period last year.
"Red tourism" was a major theme of the National Day holiday. Statistics indicate that 78.8 percent of tourists took part in activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China held in the tourist destinations that they were visiting.
Self-driving tours, family trips and other customized trips have become new highlights of National Day holiday travel. Gansu, Qinghai, and Guizhou provinces were among the most popular self-driving tour destinations.
From Oct. 1 to 6, accommodation revenue increased by 34.5 percent year on year.
The holiday also saw people’s cultural activities enriched. Statistics from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism indicate that 66.4 percent of tourists visited culture and history-themed sites and 59.5 visited cultural and historical streets.
Shanghai held 4,974 cultural activities and 5,966 reading activities to enrich people’s lives. Guangdong Museum in southern China’s Guangdong province received more than 90,000 tourists during the holiday.
The nighttime economy also experienced a boom during the National Day holiday. According to China UnionPay, nighttime catering spending increased by 54.9 percent from Oct.1 to 6, higher than the average growth of the sector as a whole at 40.3 percent.
