More and more office workers in large and medium-sized cities purchase eye patches, nap pillows and other sleeping aids to get better rest during lunch breaks, Workers' Daily reported recently.
More than 820,000 nap pillows from over 500 brands could be found on an online shopping website. The monthly sales of many products, ranging from a few dozen yuan to 100 yuan, exceed 10,000.
A white-collar worker surnamed Shi, who just purchased an L-shaped nap pillow online, said she could place her arms on the product to avoid them getting numb from napping on the table.
Shi said some of her colleagues bought chairs with adjustable backrests, eye patches or headsets to feel more comfortable while taking naps in the limited office space.
To satisfy white-collar demand for better naps, shared sleep cabins were put into operation in office buildings in Beijing and Shanghai back in 2017.
Each cabin measures 1.8 meters long and 0.8 meters across, which suits adults. It is equipped with a bed, disposable bedding kits, sleep lights and free Wi-Fi.
The user can scan a QR code and enter the cabin, which charges 20 yuan per hour in the peak period from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 12 yuan per hour off-peak. The product is now being upgraded to be safer and more user-friendly.
While many office workers went out of their way to get better rest during lunch breaks, some choose to spend nearly two hours doing recreational activities such as working out, getting facials, shopping and watching movies.
A sales manager of a beauty salon in Chaoyang District, Beijing, said their busiest business hours are lunch breaks and weekends. Customers can take a nap while getting a treatment and save time after work to spend with families, the manager said.
