Chinese homemakers become younger

As young Chinese are often more innovative and energetic than their elders, and they also tend to be more educated, they are becoming increasingly popular in China's homemaking market, especially when it comes to such sub-categories such as early child education.

According to survey data released by Shenzhen Domestic Economy Association, the post-90s generation now account for about 10 percent of the homemaker industry in Shenzhen, and they often tend to be early child educators or maternity matrons.

Yuan Yinlin is a 22-year-old tutor from a household management company in Nanshan district, Shenzhen. Her daily work includes helping the child play puzzle games such as Lego, talking about picture books, playing music to the child, and occasionally taking the child to the park for a walk.

Yuan said many parents prefer young people when they are looking for early childhood tutors. The rationale is that children prefer youngsters and they can communicate more easily.

"The post-80s generation has the advantage of rich experience, but the post-90s generation should not be underestimated. We are generally highly educated," Yuan explained.

Zhao Lihua, manager of a domestic service company based in Shenzhen, said homemakers in their 30s account for 20 percent of company employees because they are energetic, can get along well with homeowners and have a broader range of knowledge.

Deng Shaofang, the manager of a family service company, revealed that in the past, there was a real prejudice against domestic workers, and they were not respected. In recent years, the homemaking industry has become an industry with a fresh face.

The participation of young homemakers in the industry has also motivated senior workers to improve skills through training, Deng said.
