190 Volvo vehicles made in China arrived in Belgium on July 4 through the Chang'an China-Europe freight train.
The Volvo vehicles will be later shipped to 25 European countries including the UK, France, Germany, and Italy.
Starting from Xi’an, western China’s Shaanxi province, the Chang’an freight train traveled 9,783 kilometers through Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany before it arrived in Belgium.
According to Volvo, the vehicles shipped by the freight train this time were models XC60, and all of them were produced in Volvo Chinese factories.
It’s the second time for the Chang’an freight train to transport Volvo vehicles after it carried two types of Volvo models to China from Europe last year. It also marked the first time for the train to export made-in-China Volvo vehicles.
According to Zhai Ruopeng, vice general manager of the company responsible for the shipment, the vehicles were loaded in containers in the railway section from Xi’an to Malaszewicze, Poland, and were then transported in RORO (roll-on/roll-off) carriers in the following journey.
Volvo noted that the vehicles produced in its Goteborg and Ghent factories will also be shipped to China by the Chang’an freight train.
Volvo Cars was purchased by China’s automotive group Geely in 2010. According to statistics, Volvo models produced in Chinese factories have been exported to over 70 countries and regions so far.
The China-Europe freight trains play an important part in the company’s export strategy for Europe. In the first half of 2019 alone, the export volume through the freight service accounted for 26.4 percent of the company’s total export to the continent.
