Guangzhou aims for higher level opening up in the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

On March 24, during the period of the 2019 China Development Forum, the Guangzhou roundtable themed “Opening a New Realm” was held in Beijing. Zhang Shuofu, member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee as well as Secretary of the Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee, delivered a speech. Mayor Wen Guohui offered a promotion encompassing the theme. John Flint, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Group, Zhang Jin, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cedar Holding Group, Robert E. Moritz, Chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers Global, Frank Mars, Co-owner of Mars, Incorporated, and Merlin Swire, Chairman of John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Ltd, each separately gave speeches regarding how these Fortune 500 companies relate to Guangzhou. Views and outlooks regarding deep cooperation between the parties in the context of the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area were also explored.

In his speech, Zhang Shuofu said that in October last year, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited Guangdong in person to point out the direction for the reform and development of Guangzhou in the new era. We must adhere to the spirit of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and thoroughly study and implement the important guidance of General Secretary Xi Jinping for the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and seize Opportunities, unswervingly deepen reform and opening up, focus on enhancing Guangzhou as one of the core engines for regional development of the Greater Bay Area, building a strong city of science and technology innovation, a strong city of advanced manufacturing, a strong city of modern service industry, a strong cultural city, and build an international metropolis. He hoped that all the guests would pay more attention to Guangzhou and make suggestions for the development of the Guangzhou and hopes that more friends will invest in the southern city.

Wen Guohui said that Guangzhou has seized the major opportunities for the construction of the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, which has further expanded its opening up and promoted the new vitality of the old city. Guangzhou will focus on strengthening its function as a core engines for the regional development of the Greater Bay Area, and work with Hong Kong, Macao and surrounding cities to build a world-class Bay Area and a world-class city group.

The heads of 76 world-renowned companies attended the round table. The guests regarded that Guangzhou, as a core engine for the regional development in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, has increasingly enhanced urban functions and continuously optimized the business environment. Furthermore, that it possesses good conditions for technological innovation and continuously enhances its influence and competitiveness. It is a city full of vitality and opportunities. The guests mentioned that they will seize opportunities involving construction in the Greater Bay Area, further deepen exchanges and cooperation with Guangzhou, and help Guangzhou's reform and opening up achieve a new level of success.

John Flint, chief executive of HSBC Holdings Ltd., said that Guangzhou has become an integral part of their business. They have seen the economic scale and development potential of Guangzhou, and Guangzhou's future has more importance to HSBC.

Robert E. Moritz, global president of PricewaterhouseCoopers, said: Not only today, Guangzhou has also developed a plan for the next decade, and its vision is very long-term.

Zhang Jin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cedar Holdings, explained that Guangzhou has already upgraded from a traditional trading city into an international trade center. It is a hub for international aviation, shipping and technology innovation. The century-old city has renewed its new vitality and new impetus.

Merlin Swire, chairman of the John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Ltd., said that since the reform and opening up, the Guangzhou municipal government has actively encouraged foreign investors including the Swire Group to come and invest in Guangzhou. They will continue to invest in Guangzhou and Greater Bay Area and develop together with Guangzhou.

Frank Mars, the Co-owner of Mars, provided a speech as well thanking the Chinese government as well as the Guangzhou Municipal Government for their support and gratitude for the partnership they have established.
