China’s civil aviation industry is expected to see a total air transport turnover of 121.7 billion tonne-kilometers (tkm) by the end of the year. Thanks to reform and opening-up, today, the air transport turnover in a single day is more than that of the whole year of 1978, official data indicated.

A total of 615 million passenger trips are to be made, and a cargo turnover of 7.5 million tonnes will be realized by the year-end, said Feng Zhenglin, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

In 1978, the industry's total air transport turnover was only 299 million tkm, ranking 37th internationally.

The civil aviation industry has gone from strength to strength over the last 40 years of reform and opening-up, Feng said.

The country’s air transport safety has now reached an advanced international level. Chinese air carriers have now flown for 99 months without a major fatal crash, a combined total of 67.37 million hours of safe travel.

The industry is now made up of around 60 airline companies, 45 of which are state-owned, while the remaining 15 are private.

Additionally, the industry has made initial progress in the modernization of the governance system, through which administration is separated from management, and the role of the government to manage public affairs is separated from ownership of national assets.

The country’s global aviation status has also dramatically improved. So far, China has signed bilateral air transport agreements with 126 countries and regions, 90 of which were signed after China's reform and opening-up, Feng explained.

Now about 15,684 regular passenger flights and 1,894 regular cargo flights are made between China and the rest of the world every week. According to statistics, China contributed more than 25 percent to the growth of global air transport in 2017, quickly outpacing other countries.

The industry’s strategic role in promoting national economic and social development is becoming more noticeable, Feng said. In the 40 years of reform and development, the turnover of the civil aviation industry within the transportation industry rose from 1.6 percent to 31 percent.

Feng said the next step is to take specific measures to build a strong civil aviation industry, including the establishment of a market-oriented, efficient and organic way to allocate resources and strengthen the legal system, among others.
