Brazil’s Vale, the world’s top iron ore producer, has brought the world’s largest bulkers to Shanghai. The two Valemax ship models were presented by the company at the CIIE.
Valemax boasts a 400,000-tonne load capacity of ore, which is enough to manufacture 400,000 vehicles. The ship is 360 meters long and 65 meters wide and 30 meters in height. Its deck area is the size of three soccer pitches.
According to Vale, Valemax fleet is designed for ore shipments between Brazil and China and most of the ships receive Chinese investment only and were designed and built by Chinese companies, reported news portal Jiemian.com.
The world’s first Valemax, the first generation of its kind, was delivered into service in March 2011.
The two models on exhibition are second-generation Valemax ships and are currently serving Chinese companies. The second-generation ships, whose construction started in 2016, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41% and are able to be powered by clean energy instead of fuel.
By 2020, a total of 68 Valemax ships will be in operation, some 54 of which will be made by China, indicating a total investment of 5.5 billion yuan.
