With more than 5,000 exhibits from 173 countries and regions ready to meet crowds of visitors at the China International Import Expo (CIIE), People’s Daily takes you to meet some of the most marvelous and creative ones in this international expo.

Biofore, a concept car from Finnish company UPM-Kymmene Corporation, arrived in Shanghai on Sept. 12, roughly two months ahead of the CIIE opening on Monday, marking the first exhibit to enter the expo area.

As the world’s third largest paper company, UPM’s Biofore is made of wood-based materials, from its car body shell to its fuel tank. The vehicle weighs 1.1 tonnes, which makes it 25% lighter than ordinary vehicles of the same size. It boasts a maximum speed of 120 km/h and can run for 590 km, news portal ThePaper reported.

Ever since the idea occurred in 2009, the company has been working with multiple universities in Finland to create the unique vehicle. Recyclable wood-based materials are used for its interior and it runs on bio-diesel fuel, which can cut 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions emitted from fossil fuels.

In the forestry industry, tree trunks are turned into logs while thinner parts of a tree are turned into paper. The rest is usually discarded. The Finnish company, however, has turned that “waste” into fuel through years of research.
