
Oct. 20 marked the largest alumni convention for Tsinghua University in Europe over the course of the past decade. Around 300 Tsinghua alumni gathered at the Royal Institution to attend the First European Tsinghua Alumni Convention. With an active network, distinguished Tsinghua alumni and guests from all over the world participated in the event.
Alumni present included Guo Yike, Professor of Computing Science, Imperial College London, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Member of Academia Europaea; Wang Xiaochuan, Founder and CEO of Sogou;Wang Yongli, Minister Counsellor of Education Sector – Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland;Zhang Jianwei, Professor of University of Hamburg and Zhang Jinsheng, Vice President of Tus-Holdings Co., Ltd.
With the theme “The C-European Cooperation in a New Era,” the conference called upon Tsinghua University and Tsinghua alumni in Europe to build further communication between China and the EU, connect industry talents with networking opportunities, and promote further cooperation between Tsinghua and EU academic institutions.
“It is Tsinghua alumni’s responsibility to learn about western civilization, gain a deeper understanding of our own culture, and connect the East with the West,” said Shi Zongkai, Vice Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council.
Minister Counsellor Wang Yongli explained, “Tsinghua alumni in the UK are an important force to enhance the relationship between the two countries further.”
Shaun Fitzgerald, Director of the Royal Institution, added,“the Royal Institution is delighted to host the Tsinghua alumni convention.”
The one-day conference not only provided an opportunity for Tsinghua alumni to connect with their friends but also served as a platform to discuss and exchange ideas with schoolfellows from different disciplines through various plenary sessions. In addition to the formal talks, there were also performances and exhibitions, which brought Tsinghua’s spirit and Chinese culture to Europe. (Tianxing Bai)
