Wang Yi meets with Pompeo, asks the US to immediately stop its wrong words and deeds

By Curtis Stone (People's Daily Online)    15:20, October 08, 2018

On October 8, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Beijing. The visit was proposed by the US Secretary of State and the meeting was agreed to by China.

In the meeting with the US Secretary of State, Wang Yi pointed out that the US has escalated its trade friction with China. He also noted that the US has adopted a series of measures that have caused harm to China’s rights and interests on issues such as Taiwan and has attacked China’s internal and external policies for no reason.

Wang said that these practices have directly impacted the mutual trust between the two countries and have cast a dark shadow over the future of China-US relations and are totally inconsistent with the interests of the two peoples.

Wang expressed China’s demand for the US to immediately stop its wrong words and deeds, adding that it is in the best interest of both countries to stick to the right path of win-win cooperation and avoid the wrong path of conflict and confrontation.

Wang said that the US Sectary of State’s interest in exchanging views with China on hot issues such as the Korean Peninsula shows that the two major powers and the two permanent members of the UN Security Council need and should strengthen communication and cooperation and assume the responsibilities entrusted to them by the international community.

“Such cooperation should be supported by a healthy and stable bilateral relationship,” Wang said, adding that he hoped Secretary Pompeo’s visit to Beijing will play a positive role in achieving this goal.
