Panzhou locals show willingness in poverty alleviation

By Nicholas Dweh Nimley (People's Daily Online)    13:17, August 02, 2018

The poverty alleviation campaign initiated by the Chinese government seems to be yielding results with locals or targeted groups fully involved with the CPC agenda.

Whether it is in the mountains, that could be considered as impossible for agriculture by many, the resilience shown by locals in the mountainous region of Panzhou County is worth commending.

Liupanshui Municipal City Government is ensuring that no stone is left behind regarding the overall government poverty alleviation agenda. They are implementing projects for economic revitalization.

As part of said effort, foreign journalists were taken on a media tour across the city that was sponsored by the city government and organized by People’s Daily Online, a subsidiary of China's leading newspaper People's Daily.

The journalists visited and held interviews at the Niangniangshan Plateau Wetland Eco-agriculture and Tourism Development Company, 300 kilometers off Panzhou County in Liupanshui Municipality; a company that is transforming the lives of the locals in this mountainous region through employment and other forms of income generation.

Through cooperation, the company, involved with fruits production, owns 30 percent shares of the produce, while the locals owns 70 percent. Over 60,000 jobs have been provided by the company on the 2,000 hectares of production land.

Tao Zhengxue, Chief Executive of the Niangnian Plateau explained that 41 percent of the 400 million yuan for the project was provided by the government. He revealed that per capita income for each worker is 14,000 yuan.

Basic social services are provided by the company for 9,750 locals who are residents of the concession area, he added.

Locals have also expressed delight with the company operation and have thanked the government for providing funds for construction of their homes.

Accordingly, the government provided 30,000 yuan as assistance to each family for the building of their homes.

“You can see the changes now in the lives of the people, because the coming of this company has brought great changes to their lives,” Tao said. He added that prior to the establishment of the company in 2012, local residents sought for jobs out of their village.

He indicated that thorns pea is a local fruit grown only in Guizhou Province due to the weather condition and the company makes the fruit including blue berries and kiwi fruits into juices.

However, it is important for companies in Africa, especially Liberia to learn from this company or other companies on how to live up to concession agreements.
