Commentary on Writing in a pompous style begs the question: Does writing style really matter?

By Ai Wu (People's Daily Online)    16:22, July 04, 2018

News written in a pompous style, represented by such expressions as “on your knees,” “cry your eyes out,” “scared silly” have been all the rage recently. This way of writing harms the credibility of the media, pollutes the ecology of public opinion, and is not conducive to fostering a green cyberspace.

Writers should move away from this style of writing and use concise language, facts, and innovative solutions, as put forward by General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping, so as to advocate a clean and honest writing style.

Incorrect style of writing reflects poor social mentality. It has become a common trick for some media accounts to attract attention by belittling others and bragging about themselves. This, however, is just an act of bravado. The pompous style of news writing does China no good, no matter the motives.

Each person and each media account has its own unique style. It is precisely because of this that we have a diversity of public opinions and free expression of ideas. Yet, it must be noted that there should always be a bottom line for what we say or write. Boastful and arrogant expressions go against the rules of plainness and objectivity, thus crossing the bottom line.

The style of news writing matters, as it is associated with Party conduct and social atmosphere. There is no shortage of cases in history and contemporary examples that just talking the talk leads to defeat.

General Secretary Xi has stressed that writing should be straightforward and precise, make a clear description and in-depth analysis of problems, and raise incisive ideas. We should make sure that our news writing uses “concise language, real facts, and innovative solutions.”

A correct news-writing style is of great significance in guiding public opinion and binding the people together to create a healthy network space. Be it mainstream media or social media, we are duty-bound to refine our style of writing in presenting China to the world.
